The Blackout Kitchen / practical food for real households

Plan three useful days of meals

Start with the manuscript’s worked four-person menu. Adjust household size, cooking mode, dietary preferences and ingredients already in your cupboard.

Worked menu / four people

Your three days

The complete default example is the book’s worked three-day menu. It contains three meals each day, with no-cook mode choosing the book’s separate cold menu. The menu is not an individual nutrition plan.

Only mark an ingredient as already owned when your supply covers its full planned quantity. Marking “beans” covers all listed bean types. Partial stocks still need checking against the basket. Choosing vegetarian switches to the supported no-cook menu.

Snacks and extras

  • 12 extra × 100 g fruit cups
  • 400 g extra crackers
  • 300 g tolerated nuts or seeds
  • 200 g chocolate or biscuits

Already included in the shopping basket; do not buy them twice. Share by appetite and add familiar food for different needs. Whole nuts are not suitable for under-fives.

Water assumptions

UK planning basis: 12 litres / day; 36 litres over three days (drinking). The 3 litres per person per day is drinking water. Cooking, washing and other uses need additional water. The manuscript also uses around 10 litres per person per day as a broader comfort planning example including basic cooking and hygiene; it is not the Be Ready drinking-water figure.

Recipe water: About 2.15–2.55 litres for the source menu's recipes. Reserve at least 3 litres for recipe water, with more contingency. Keep the UK's drinking-water allocation separate. For the US CDC baseline, do not count the same recipe water twice.

Shopping list

Source quantities are for four people. For 4 people, amounts scale proportionally, rounding only to package increments provided in the structured source. Other values are estimates, not exact retail pack counts. Owned ingredients are removed when selected.
