The Blackout Kitchen / practical food for real households

What does the UK Be Ready food checklist ask?

The UK Be Ready checklist asks households to have three days of food that needs no cooking or refrigeration. This page explains that official advice; it is separate from our shopping example.

The advice in brief: the UK Be Ready checklist asks households to prepare three days of food that needs no cooking or refrigeration.

This page explains the official checklist’s food component. It is not a shopping basket: the separate UK emergency food list offers a worked menu and quantities. The campaign is routine preparedness advice, not a statement that an emergency is imminent.

What does “food that needs no cooking or refrigeration” mean?

Choose food that can be eaten as sold without heating, and that does not need chilled storage before opening. Check each pack. A product that is shelf-stable unopened may require refrigeration after opening.

How to act on the food checklist

  1. Choose familiar meals and snacks your household already eats.
  2. Check labels for storage, preparation, allergens and whether food is ready to eat.
  3. Include a manual tin opener and account for people’s different needs.
  4. Rotate supplies through ordinary shopping and replace items used.

Why does UK guidance mention three days?

The Be Ready campaign launched in October 2026 and encourages preparedness for three days of disruption. The campaign’s checklist includes food and water among household preparations. For the latest exact wording, consult the official checklist directly.

This government checklist is not interchangeable with an example menu containing heated meals. For meals that need no cooking, see our separate no-cook menu.
